According to the most recent data
from the Department of Agriculture, the average age of an American
farmer is 58 years old, and that number has been continually increasing
for some three decades..... Though the number of farmers has been falling for many years,
the number of young farmers, defined as farmers under the age of 35, is
actually moving, slightly, in the opposite direction. The number of
young farmers in the U.S. increased 1.5 percent, according to the latest
Agriculture Census in 2014. In some parts of the country, the increase
is even more dramatic — the number of younger farmers is up 40 percent in Maine.
