The state of Maine farms

Speaking at a panel on women in agriculture recently, USDA Rural Development State Director Virginia Manuel offered these stats: 

•  There are 8173 fams in Maine, up from 7196 in 2002. 
• 29% of Maine farmers are women, up from 25% in 2007
• 48% of Maine farms list farming as the primary occupation
• 30% of Maine farmes are 55-64 years of age
• The number of farmers less than 35 years old has grown by nearly 40% in the past five years.
