The Public Religion Research Institute has done a state by state breakdown of religious affiliations and Maine is one of thirteen states where the non-affiliated are the largest category. The 13 are not just liberal states; they include Alaska and Idaho. In Maine 28% are unaffiliated, 26% are Catholic and 24% are white mainstream Protestant.
